Blinking Tree Eyes Revisted

A visual guide to building blinking tree eyes.

I've only been able to get about 1 night out of a 9v batter so far.
I may have to slow down the blink rate...
Thinking about cascading 556's.

Original kudos go to: http://home.comcast.net/~pumpkin1000/props/eyes.htm

Parts List:
(2) 100 ohm resistors 1/4w
(2) 22k ohm resistors 1/4w
(2) 330k ohm resistors 1/4w
(4) Red LED
LM556 Dual TimerQty
22uf Capacitor 16v+
33uf Capaticor 16v+
9v Battery
9v Battery Clip
Double Sided Foam Tape
3' Solid Core Wire Pair (I stripped some ethernet cable)

ASSEMBLIES:

First, a couple of assemblies from the parts list
are going to make things go a lot faster:

1) Straighten 22k resistor.

2) Twisted 22k and 330k resistor.

3) Bent 330k resitor:

4) Capacitors with commons (negatives) tied together.

5) Two sets of eyes with current limiting (100 ohm) resistor.
Positives to the left, soldered in the middle.
100 ohm resistor for current limiting on the negative side.

Main Assembly:

1) Solder the 22k resitor (assembly 1) to pins 1 & 14.
Pull the tail from 14 around pin 4, to pin 10,
Solder and clip.
Watch your orientation on this one!
The notch should be facing you!

2) Now solder assembly 2 to pins 14, 13, and 12.
The 22k (red red orange) should be soldered to pin 14.
It's best to apply a bit of solder to each pin, and then heat the pin.
Loop the tail from pin 12 to pin 8, solder, and clip.

3) Next, solder assembly 3, the 330k resistor to pins 1 & 2.
Solder the tail to pin 6.

4) Next, solder the center pin of assembly 4 to pin 7.
You'll want to manuever the bigger capacitor towards pin 8,
The smaller towards pin 6.
And you guessed it, solder the positive side of the big cap to pin 8,
The positive side of the smaller cap to pin 6.

5) Next, cut a pair of ethernet cable pairs into foot lengths,
And solder to a pair of eyes.
I solder the white part to positive and dark part to the resistor.
Join up the negatives of two sets, and twist.

6) Attach the negatives of the eyes at pin 7.
Attach one eye positive at pin 9, the other at pin 5.
Attach the battery leads at pins 14 postive, and pin 7 negative.
Use a pad of sticky tape to isolate the battery,
And strap it down.

7) Hide a couple sets in some very dark bushes.

This is a great idea!
This would also work for blinking fireflys on pirates at Disneyland. Just attach to a wire. But, you would need something to move the wire like a wheel that turns or something.

Can you make the eyes dim instead of blink?
